A special preview of events happening next Tuesday night – New Year’s Eve.
ANGELS SING: As a pre-teen, Charlie Sexton studied guitar with the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. Now 23, the former solo artist is teamed up with two members of Vaughan’s band Double Trouble, as well as another Vaughan pupil. Their group, Arc Angels, won’t release their self-titled debut LP until March. But the hot rock band will preview songs at 10:30 p.m. when Arc Angels perform a free concert at the Hard Rock Cafe, 63 W. Ontario (312-943-2252). It’ll be first come, first in, so get there early.
RAP UP: Public Enemy is among the expected headliners at the rap show scheduled to roll into the Rosemont Horizon at 6 p.m. The Horizon is at 6920 N. Mannheim, Rosemont (559-1212).
At the China Club’s first New Year’s Eve Bash, Boyz II Men, CC Peniston, Icy Blue and Kim Simms will begin performing at 9 p.m. In the Dragon Room, the non-rap ProJam series will end the year with a concert by former Rolling Stone Mick Taylor and Charlie Musselwhite. The China Club is at 616 W. Fulton (559-1212).
CHICAGO’S BEST: The city’s best groups will be playing at clubs throughout the city on Tuesday night. Pop rockers Material Issue will ring in ’92 with a show at 9 p.m. at the Cubby Bear, 1059 W. Addison (559-1212). Their harder-rocking pals Urge Overkill will open the concert. Here’s hoping the superb Urge gets signed to a major label in the new year.
After a successful tour opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Smashing Pumpkins will headline a 9 p.m. gig at the Cabaret Metro, 3730 N. Clark (559-1212).
Do the “velour” dance with lead singer Pigtail when the New Duncan Imperials play hard-driving rock ‘n’ roll at 9 p.m. at the Avalon, 959 W. Belmont (559-1212).
Nicholas Barron’s songs blend gentle melodies with socio-political lyrics. He’ll play two acoustic sets at 8 and 10:30 p.m. at the Blue Room, 1400 N. Wells (312-951-6441). Also performing will be the Corn Kings.
BLUES BEAT: New Year’s Eve celebrations at Buddy Guy’s Legends will begin at 9 when Lonnie Brooks takes the stage. Legends is at 754 S. Wabash (559-1212).
Magic Slim and the Teardrops will play the blues at 9 at B.L.U.E.S., 2519 N. Halsted (312-528-1012).
There’ll be a double bill of the Son Seals Blues Band and Billy Branch & Sons of Blues at 9 at B.L.U.E.S. Etc., 1124 W. Belmont (559-1212).
COUNTRY STYLE: Yee hah! Alabama will perform its “Mountain Music” in a special New Year’s Eve jamboree at 10:30 p.m. at the Odeum, 1033 N. Villa Ave., Villa Park (559-1212 or 708-833-8368).
BABY YOU CAN DRIVE MY CAR: WXRT-FM (93.1), Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Center and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital are sponsoring CareCab, allowing revelers to call for a free ride home from any drinking establishment or private party in Cook County. Each ride is limited to a 20-mile radius (passengers will be charged if the drive exceeds 20 miles). CareCab is available from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. today through Thursday. Call (312) 650-6509 to arrange for rides.
Also, all rides on the CTA will be free from 8 p.m. Tuesday through 6 a.m. Wednesday. The Illinois Restaurant Association and Miller Brewing are picking up the tab.
