Speaking with … Michael Tolcher

Singer-songwriter Michael Tolcher is sated. After enjoying a nice sushi meal, the singer is ready to chat about his debut album, “I Am” (Octone Records), which will be in stores on April 6. He’s already opened for Maroon 5 and Gavin DeGraw and is anxious to get back on the road — even if that means climbing back into a cramped van. Tolcher phoned from his hometown of Atlanta to talk about the record-release shindig he’s planning, what he does to relax and why he’ll always have fond memories of Chicago.

HERE’S WHAT TOLCHER HAD TO SAY:
How you’ll celebrate your record release: I am going to have a huge party. There’s going to be catered sushi and gourmet Mexican. We’ll have a little music and a lot of fun.

Anticipation: I’m excited beyond words [about the record], but I can’t think about that too much till it’s released. It’ll drive me crazy.

Best thing about putting out this record: It is an accomplishment for me to complete a record I feel good about that people can put in their cars and listen to.

What’s in your car’s CD player: I only have a tape player in my car, and there’s this new mix of “Mission Impossible.” I bought some new drumming CDs. Those are what I listen to on a little CD player when we’re driving down the highway.

Best way to stay in shape when you’re touring: It takes a lot of discipline and a lot more effort to stay in shape on the road, but it’s definitely possible. In the winter, I like to run on treadmills.

A cliche that’s true: I’m sure you’ve heard musicians talk about how the audience gives them energy, but it’s really true. The shows are nourishing.

Last good movie you saw: Last night I saw “Memento.” It was really great.

Book you’re recommending: It’s hard to read in the van, but I liked Ishmael: An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit by Daniel Quinn. I also like anything by Tom Robbins. Jitterbug Perfume is one by him that I really like.

Your writing dreams: I spend a lot of time with words, so I think I could write a book. I write in my journal — just fantasy and other stories. I love manipulating words and languages.

Your travels thus far: I’ve been to London, other parts of England, Scotland and Wales. I’ve been to South America, Mexico and Canada. I haven’t been to Asia yet. I haven’t traveled out of the U.S. as much as I’d like, but I’ve slept in every state except for maybe three or four.

Why Chicago is special to you: It was the first town I visited outside of Atlanta. It was the first time my parents let me out of the house on my own. I was 16.

How you managed that solo road trip: A friend’s dad paid me about $100 to drive his carpet-cleaning van from Atlanta to Chicago. My parents’ rule was that as long as I made good grades, I had the freedom to do whatever. I got to Chicago and the guy I dropped the van off to took me to see the Bulls play. That was really fun.
