It hasn’t even been a month since Lee Jong-Suk enrolled for his mandatory military duty on March 8. But there’s a ton of us fans who miss him already. Am I right? (That’s a rhetorical question, by the way.)
What is it about the 29-year-old actor that has made him such a fan favorite? Yes, he’s handsome. Then again, so are most stars of K-Dramas. He’s a fantastic actor, whose range was beautifully showcased in his most current drama, “Romance is a Bonus Book.” But again, many of his peers are wonderful thespians themselves.
What it boils down to is that Lee has that elusive It factor. He’s charismatic, charming and can laugh at himself. In this video that tutti frutti shared on youtube, Lee is positively adorkable as he dances along to PSY’s “New Face” and shows us what he’s got. He may have briefly trained with SM Entertainment before committing to his acting career, but no one is more aware than Lee himself that his dancing doesn’t compare to the pros behind him. He looks shy and embarrassed during the pivotal hip thrusts, which just make this performance that much more enjoyable to watch.
No one is immune to his charms. Being in Lee’s presence makes even celebrities weak in the knees. Filipina actress Giselle Sanchez hosted Lee’s fanmeeting at the 16,500-seat Smart Araneta Coliseum in Manila. She said jokingly (or not!) that when he hugged her, she forgot everything that she had so carefully memorized.
He’s known for being thoughtful to his fellow cast members. His “While You Were Sleeping” co-star Bae Suzy said that he always looked out for her.
And this past winter, Lee shared a photo and sweet message for his “I Hear Your Voice” co-star, Lee Bo-Young, who was expecting a baby with her husband, Ji Sung (of “Kill Me, Heal Me” fame). He wished her a safe and healthy pregnancy and delivery. He has also said that the two sent each other text messages to cheer each other on regarding their respective K-Dramas. Coincidentally, when Lee Bo-Young’s series, “God’s Gift – 14 Days,” finished airing on SBS, it was Lee Jong-Suk’s “Doctor Stranger” that took over the time slot.
Lee is loyal. He’s been friends with Lee Sung-Kyung (who, like himself, is a former model) for the past dozen years. So when she filmed her leading role in “Weightlifting Fairy, Kim Bok-Joo,” of course he made a much-talked about cameo appearance. The meta moment wasn’t lost on his fans, who saw that his segment cleverly alluded to his starring role as a manhwa character in “W.”
Lee is expected to be discharged from his military duty on January 2, 2021. And his fans are counting the days until his comeback.
Note: KOCOWA originally ran this on their website on April 5, 2019 with the title: “Why We Miss Lee Jong-Suk.” They ran a slightly different version of this on September 3, 2021 under the title: “Why We Love Lee Jong-Suk.”
