Ask Jonny Lang about his favorite book or film and he’ll be hard-pressed to come up with an answer. But ask him about his favorite music and the guitarist-singer-songwriter can go on forever.

We first were introduced to Lang when he was a teen dream playing in nightclubs he was way, way too young to be in had he not been the scheduled entertainer. Though it’s hard to believe, Lang celebrated his 23rd birthday on Thursday.

Currently on tour promoting his latest album, “Long Time Coming” (A&M Records), Lang took a few minutes to phone before a show in Boise, Idaho.

HERE’S WHAT LANG HAD TO SAY:

Favorite sports: I love golfing. I started when I was 15 but didn’t get serious until the last couple of years. My handicap is about 12.

The family business: My dad and grandfather were farmers in North Dakota. I did odd jobs here and there but nothing too laborious.

Farming: I would’ve been a good farmer. I loved it.

What surprises people about you: That I’ve been married almost three years [to Haylie Johnson] and have my own family now. I think some people just remember me as a kid.

On how long it took to fall in love with your wife: I knew right away she was the one.

Most memorable Chicago experience: The first time I played Chicago, I opened up for Honeyboy Edwards at FitzGerald’s [in Berwyn]. We were sitting backstage and I got him to tell me stories about Robert Johnson. He was a little reluctant to talk but I kept asking.

CDs you’re listening to: I’m really into gospel now. There’s this guy, John P. Kee, who’s my favorite right now.

Favorite thing to do in Chicago: I’m not a shopper, but I really like going down to the shopping district [on Michigan Avenue]. That downtown area by the Water Tower is really pretty.

On reading critics’ reviews: I don’t agree with most reviews about other artists’ albums, so I don’t really pay that much attention to what’s written about me.

On label interference: I’ve been really blessed with favor from the record company. There’s no place worse to be than just sitting on a shelf with no one behind what you’re doing.

Other child prodigies: [Golfer] Michelle Wie, [NBA rookie] LeBron James … there are so many of them now. Young people are fascinated by other successful young people, and it seems parents are more supportive of letting their kids run with their dreams.

The key to success: Having your parents’ support is key to fulfilling any potential.
