When my husband and I got married, we had a total of three rice cookers. Coincidentally, we each had the same small National (Panasonic) rice cooker pictured above. When my mother decided we needed an upgrade, she bought us a new Tiger rice cooker. We gave away two of our older ones to our friends, keeping just the one my parents had sent me off to college with.
When we went off to college, my parents bought each of us a small rice cooker. I dug mine out & now it’s become my son’s. He makes rice in there and also uses it to cook ramen. It works perfectly even after all these decades. He loves it! ๐

This rice cooker is decades old. And I hadn’t used it in years. But after my mother told me that she sometimes cooks ramen in her rice cooker, my son wanted to try making his own rice cooker ramen, too. As you can imagine, our primary rice cooker is full of … rice.ย So I pulled out my old college-era rice cooker and gave it to him to use!

His ramen was done in about 7 minutes. Yours may vary depending on what kind of rice cooker you have.
TIP: When my son was younger and wanted to make his own ramen, I bought microwavable cup or bowl ramen that he could microwave himself. As he grew up, those portions were much too small. What we’ve found is that all brick ramen actually are microwavable. Some brands note this on their packaging, while others don’t. But you can just put it all into a microwaveable glass bowl with water, cover it with a paper towel (to prevent splashing) and about seven minutes later, piping hot ramen! This is perfect for students in dorms who have microwaves, but no access to stoves. Brick ramen are cheaper than the ones packaged in microwavable containers, offer larger portions and cause less waste. Win, win!
CHECK THIS OUT: I don’t think this rice cooker is sold anywhere anymore, because it’s so old. However, rice cookers make our lives so much easier — and can be used to make more than just rice. My next rice cooker review (one day) will be our Zojirushi. Three seems to be our magic number when it comes to rice cookers! (Anyhow, here’s my review of our Tiger rice cooker, which we use daily.)
RAMEN vs RAMYUN: In the past, some sticklers have pointed out that I should be saying ramyun instead of ramen. I would, but the brand we use is literally called Jin Ramen, so that’s what I’m going with. And in Korean, ramen/ramyun is spelled the same: ๋ผ๋ฉด. So … whatever.
