Most artists make their American debuts playing smoky bars or small clubs. Anggun Cipta Sasmi found herself touring alongside Sarah McLachlan, Bonnie Raitt, Queen Latifah and Natalie Merchant at this year’s Lilith Fair.
The Jesus Lizard is about the last band anyone expected to sign to a major label. But seven years after its inception, the exhilarating hard-core alternative band has jumped to Capitol – home of the Beatles.
Until releasing his latest album, Nick Heyward hadn’t had a fantastic day for a long, long time. A decade ago, Heyward fronted the English pop band Haircut 100, whose debut album, “Pelican West,” spawned a trio of hit singles (“Love Plus One,” “Favourite Shirt” and “Fantastic Day”). At the height of the group’s success, he trimmed himself from Haircut to pursue a solo career.
Call them a supergroup, and the Arc Angels will shrug off the compliment. “Maybe we’re an almost supergroup,” says vocalist-guitarist Charlie Sexton. “We’re not there yet.”
The Kids in the Hall are comedy’s answer to matinee idols. In their native Canada, the young, smart and cute Kids attract groupies who would look at home at a Winger rock concert.
Four Southern rockers called the Georgia Satellites have been lost in space during their current concert tour. “The crowds haven’t been what they should be, especially for having two good rock ‘n’ roll bands out together,” said guitarist Dan Baird in a phone interview from an Elektra Records office in Los Angeles.
“I know to some people we sound like a magician act,” said singer David Baerwald. “But we decided on our name quite simply. David (Ricketts) and I were rehearsing, and people would just talk to us as if we were one person. It’d be, `What do you think about that, David and David?’ It was kind of funny at first, but then we just ended up liking the sound of it. We couldn’t think of a better name that described us, so well, so we stuck with it.”
