Ruby Modine grew up watching her parents, actors Matthew Modine and Caridad Rivera, work in Hollywood. Modine, 27, is one of the stars of the Showtime series, “Shameless,” as well as the film, “Happy Death Day.” Based on West Coast, she says her favorite day trips are “close to Los Angeles for now, because of work. Claremont is my favorite city. Shout out to Claremont Skatepark. Weekend getaways consist of driving to the desert, lying on the hoods of cars and looking up at the stars. Then we go to diners for pancakes and coffee.”

Fans may follow Modine on Twitter and Instagram.

Q. What is your favorite vacation destination?

A. I have a few favorites, but Ischia in Italy would be one of my top five. Get a little boat with a group of friends (or) family and sail around the islands. Jump in the sea at random locations and swim to the caves you’ll come across. The restaurants that have stairs that begin in the sea, climb them and eat a meal. Swim and explore everywhere.

Q. What untapped destination should people know about?

A. Squirrel Island (in Maine).

Q. What was the first trip you took as a child? And did you love it … or not so much?

A. I was blessed to travel a lot when I was little. I loved all of my adventures, from riding camels in Morocco, to climbing pyramids in Mexico, to exploring and getting lost in pitch-black caves in Malta, (to) river rafting in Switzerland, running through a field in the French countryside to road tripping through the Alps.

Q. What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from your travels?

A. Learn to say please and thank you in every language. Give yourself over to the journey you are on. Don’t have limitations and go with your full heart and soul. Be present and breathe in the air of the city or country you are in. Learn as much as you can, laugh as much as you are able and take it all in. Every leaf, every cloud, every sound. Everything.

Q. Have you traveled to a place that stood out so much that you felt compelled to incorporate it into your work?

A. England and Old Montreal in Canada.

Q. Where is the most romantic destination?

A. There is a point up on the peak of a mountain that I’ve recently been taken to that you can see the whole city (which city?) below, every single light. When you look up you also see every single star, my favorite. Behind you is a long trail that goes deep into the woods and at the end of it is a little waterfall. I’ve only been taken so can’t give the coordinates, but it’s near Mount Baldy and I couldn’t stop smiling.

Q. If you’ve ever gone away for the holidays, which was the best trip?

A. New Year’s Eve in Capri, Italy. Nearly 48 hours of music and dancing.

Q. What are your favorite hotels?

A. Any hotel that has room service, clean sheets and isn’t located next to a highway. A pool and gym are always a plus, too.

Q. What are your five favorite cities?

A. New York City, London, Paris, Rome and Old Montreal.

Q. Where have you traveled to that most reminded you of home?

A. London.

Q. Where would you like to go that you have never been to before?

A. Japan.

Q. When you go away, what are some of your must-have items?

A. A toothbrush, my journal, my camera and an old pair of jeans.

Q. What would be your dream trip?

A. A group of my closest friends on a Caribbean beach under a billion stars.

Q. What is your guilty pleasure when you’re on the road?

A. I spend a lot of time taking photos and videos of everything around me. I’m working on dropping my phone and just being present.

Q. What kind of research do you do before you go away on a trip?

A. I see who I may know in the area, not much else. I like to arrive and explore. Getting lost is my favorite.

Q. What is your best and/or worst vacation memory?

A. Worst vacation: We were staying in Morocco, in Ouarzazate, and I snuck out to hang out with my friends. I fell into a pool, without my floaties, and almost drowned. Thank the universe my mom happened to jog by. Best memory: Holiday time in Vail, Colorado.
