“Marvel’s Jessica Jones” actress Susie Abromeit (“King Richard,” “Chicago Med”) said Utah is the perfect place for her home base, because she loves “being in nature by the mountains and lakes. I feel my best when I’m living in nature.” That said, Abromeit – who’ll next be seen in the Great American Family network movie “Love in Bloom” – said she often gets the itch to travel. “I think I was made to travel,” she said. “I usually just have the best time being in another country exploring new cultures and eating delicious food. Even when I would have challenging moments, I’m still learning about myself and others. So even the tough moments are great, because you learn something from it about yourself and humanity.”
Q: If you had to cancel any travel plans due to this pandemic, where were they to?
A: I fortunately didn’t have to cancel any plans, although I was supposed to film “King Richard” in L.A. and that got pushed seven months. Thankfully, we ended up shooting the scenes when it wasn’t so scary to be with people again.
Q: What is your favorite vacation destination?
A: I really loved Israel and Palestine and had such a powerful time there. It helped me understand my friends who are from there more. When you immerse yourself in a place, you get to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. Hearing so many people’s stories and each point of view was beautiful.
Q: What untapped destination should people know about?
A: I absolutely loved working in Prague and Bucharest. They are both places with intense historical backgrounds. The architecture is absolutely stunning! The food and coffee are absolutely amazing and I just had such a blast being there. I had filmed an Axe body spray commercial in Prague years ago and I was so blown away by the culture, the buildings, the people. … It was such a magnificent place. We filmed in a castle. I didn’t know what to expect in Bucharest, but the food was so delicious. And every building looked like a painting. It felt a bit like Florence (Italy). It was so stunning, but I wish they had more (air conditioning) during the summer, because it does get to be about 100 degrees. I had filmed “Much Ado About Christmas” there last year and let me tell you, wearing winter clothes in the middle of summer with no AC was brutal and incredibly challenging. But honestly, I would love to go there again!
Q: What was the first trip you took as a child?
A: My first trip was when I was 7 or 8 to Naples, Florida, to see my grandparents. I loved it. I unfortunately had the flu and brought a pink bucket on the plane to throw up in. I remember I had been placed somewhere (not next to my parents) and was very, very sick. Thankfully, my mom had asked if the guy next to me could switch places with her. After seeing a sick kid throwing up in a bucket, he said yes! (Laughs) I think once I got to Florida the weather made me feel instantly better. I had grown up in Boston and when we had left that day, there was two feet of snow on the ground and it was super cold and miserable. But as soon as I got to Florida, my body felt relieved. I think I was better within a day and had the best time.
Q: Do you remember much about your first international trip?
A: I was 17 (and spent) a month in Italy to play in the Italian Open Juniors and several other tournaments leading up to it. When I was younger, I was a very competitive tennis player and traveled all over the world to compete.
Q: Where are your favorite weekend getaways?
A: I loved going away to Big Sur or Hawaii. And my weekend getaway used to be Utah when I was living in L.A., but now I live here and love it.
Q: If you’ve ever gone away for the holidays, which was the best trip?
A: I love being in Utah with my family for Christmas. That was usually my favorite. Or going to see my grandparents was also pretty great as a kid. Right after Christmas, I once went to Paris and Poland for a spur-of-the-moment trip.
Q: What are your favorite cities?
A: New York City, Prague, Bucharest, Paris, Tel Aviv, London and where I live now.
Q: Where would you like to go that you have never been to before?
A: Japan, China, New Zealand, Africa, South Africa, Iceland, Denmark, Amsterdam, Rome, Morocco and Antarctica.
Q: What would be your dream trip?
A: A safari in Africa and then off to Iceland to see the Northern Lights would be very dreamy. Then off to Japan and have the best sushi.
